🗽 The New York Report: Liberty, Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants & Rangers
We’re covering the storylines around New York’s other big teams, capturing what’s going on behind the headlines.
🏀 New York Liberty
The reigning champions took a surprising step back this season. Though they began 2025 with a franchise-best 9-0 start, the New York Liberty finished 27-17 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
In response, the organization made a bold move: the club announced it would not renew head coach Sandy Brondello’s contract, despite her guiding the team to its first WNBA title in 2024. General Manager Jonathan Kolb called the decision “proactive,” emphasizing the need for the Liberty to build sustainably at the top of the league.
The Liberty now face a significant offseason: retaining stars like Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones (all headed toward free agency in 2026), while hiring a new coach and aiming to get back to contender status.
⚾ New York Yankees
The Yankees made the postseason with a strong 94-68 record, securing a Wild Card berth. They eliminated their historic rival, the Boston Red Sox, in the Wild Card round—thanks in part to rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler’s eight shutout innings and 12 strikeouts in Game 3.
However, their run ended quickly in the Division Series: New York fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in four games (3–1), bringing the season to a disappointing close.
With the playoff streak alive but deep postseason success elusive, the Yankees head into the offseason with questions about pitching durability, roster construction, and whether they can break through the next round.
⚾ New York Mets
The New York Mets had high hopes at the start of 2025, but ultimately the season fizzled: they missed the playoffs entirely.
Expectations were high, with big payroll and talent assembled, but injuries, inconsistency and a late-season fade derailed the year. The front office now faces pressure to make changes — whether through the roster, coaching, or strategy — to avoid another disappointing campaign.
🏈 New York Jets
The New York Jets remain in deep trouble as they look for traction. Despite first-year head coach Aaron Glenn at the helm, the team has struggled mightily, ranking among the worst in the AFC. Recent coverage highlights the urgency of the situation.
With turnover problems, offensive inconsistencies and mounting pressure in the AFC East, the Jets are in a full-blown rebuild scenario. Fields of hope remain, but results and performance have not followed.
🏈 New York Giants
The New York Giants are navigating growing pains but have taken some promising steps. While still early in their rebuild, they suffered a brutal defeat when the Denver Broncos erased a 26-8 lead and stunned the Giants 33-32.
Injuries and cap issues are also pressing on the roster; the team recently restructured two major contracts to free up space (~$4.8 million) amid speculation they'll look to add a receiver to support rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
The Giants’ future hinges on Dart’s development, how quickly the supporting cast improves, and how the front office allocates cap resources in the short- and mid-term.
🏒 New York Rangers
The New York Rangers continue their transition under new head coach Mike Sullivan in the 2025-26 season. The club is in a bit of a funk early — they were shut out 2–0 at home by the Edmonton Oilers, marking their third straight home game without a goal.
Still, with a 2-2-0 start and major changes underway, the Rangers’ underlying numbers suggest the flat start may not define the season. Managing the offense, chemistry and contract situations (such as with star Artemi Panarin) will be key to moving forward.
📌 Final Word
From coaching changes to playoff appearances and rebuild mode across multiple franchises, New York’s sports landscape is far from static. The Liberty’s bold move to replace a title-winning coach signals ambition; the Yankees have grabbed a postseason berth and were bumped early; the Mets are resetting after underperforming; the Jets and Giants are in foundational phases; and the Rangers are working to bounce back.
Whether you’re a hardcore fan or just tuning into the next chapter, the stories unfolding across these teams are worth following.
