🎂 Knicks Birthdays: September 22–29
The final week of September is loaded with New York Knicks history, featuring Hall of Famers, championship contributors, and some underrated names. Let’s celebrate the birthdays that fall between September 22 and September 29.
📅 September 23 – Dick McGuire
· Knicks tenure: 1949–1957
· About: A Hall of Fame point guard and one of the greatest playmakers in franchise history. McGuire was a 7× All-Star, led the Knicks to three consecutive Finals appearances (1951–53), and is remembered as one of the NBA’s premier passers of the 1950s. His No. 15 jersey hangs in the rafters at Madison Square Garden.
📅 September 24 – Mike Woodson
· Knicks tenure (player): 1981–1983
· About: Drafted 12th overall in 1980, Woodson played two seasons as a scoring guard/forward for New York. While his Knicks playing career was brief, he returned decades later to serve as head coach, leading the team to a 54-win season and a playoff series victory in 2013 — their best year since the ’90s.
📅 September 25 – Tony Campbell
· Knicks tenure: 1984–1987
· About: A versatile swingman drafted in the first round by New York. Campbell saw limited action behind established stars in the mid-’80s but later blossomed into a top scorer with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
📅 September 26 – Dean Meminger & Trevor Ariza
· Dean Meminger (1948–2018) – Knicks tenure: 1971–1974
o Reserve guard on the 1973 Knicks championship team, known for his defense and hustle off the bench.
· Trevor Ariza (b. 1985) – Knicks tenure: 2004–2006
o Athletic forward who began his 17-year NBA career in New York. Later won a title with the Lakers in 2009.
📅 September 27 – Frank McGuire
· Knicks tenure: 1947–1949
· About: Played two seasons for the Knicks in the BAA before moving into coaching. McGuire became a legendary college coach, leading North Carolina to the 1957 NCAA championship.
📅 September 29 – Harry Gallatin
· Knicks tenure: 1948–1957
· About: Nicknamed “The Horse”, Gallatin was a durable and dominant rebounder. He made 7 All-Star teams, won the 1954 rebounding title, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. One of the original greats of Knicks history.
The New York Report
While the Knicks dominate the headlines, plenty is happening across New York's other major sports teams. Here's the latest on the Liberty, Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, and Rangers.
🏀 New York Liberty
The Liberty's bid to defend their WNBA crown ended abruptly. After finishing the regular season 27-17, New York was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by the Phoenix Mercury.
· Game 1: Liberty 76, Mercury 69 (OT)
· Game 2: Mercury 86, Liberty 60
· Game 3: Mercury 79, Liberty 73
Despite Breanna Stewart's 30-point effort in the deciding game, the Liberty couldn't advance. Soon after, the front office made a bold move — firing head coach Sandy Brondello. Just a year after winning a championship, New York now enters an offseason filled with questions about leadership and roster direction.
⚾ New York Yankees
The Bronx Bombers are October-bound once again. Thanks to a dramatic 3–2 walk-off win over the White Sox, the Yankees clinched their 60th postseason appearance.
While the AL East title slipped away, New York enters the playoffs as a Wild Card team and will square off against the Boston Red Sox in a best-of-three series at Yankee Stadium. With Aaron Boone extended through 2027, the Yankees have stability in the dugout — but pressure is high to make a deep postseason run.
⚾ New York Mets
On the other side of town, it was heartbreak for the Mets. After a promising first half, injuries to key pitchers derailed their season, and New York ultimately missed the playoffs.
Despite the collapse, star outfielder Juan Soto insists he "100 percent believes" in the franchise's future. Still, frustration among fans is boiling over, and the front office faces a critical offseason to reshape the roster.
🏈 New York Jets
The Jets are off to a 0–4 start, most recently falling 27–21 to the Dolphins. Justin Fields showed flashes with 226 passing yards and a rushing TD, but turnovers and penalties continue to sink the team. New York also added CB Jarvis Brownlee in a trade as they search for answers under first-year coach Aaron Glenn.
🏈 New York Giants
The Giants finally broke through with their first win of the season, a 21–18 upset of the Chargers behind rookie QB Jaxson Dart.
The victory was bittersweet, though. Star rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers has torn his ACL and will be sidelined for the rest of the season. His loss is a massive blow to the offense, but the win at least gave fans a glimpse of the potential future under Dart.
🏒 New York Rangers
After winning the Presidents' Trophy not long ago, the Rangers endured a stunning fall, missing the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Their elimination was sealed in a 7–3 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
The fallout was swift: Head Coach Peter Laviolette and Assistant Phil Housley were fired. The franchise now faces a critical reset, necessitating new leadership and more transparent communication as it enters the next season.
📌 Final Word
New York sports are in flux. The Yankees are heading back to October, while the Mets are heading home early. The Liberty is seeking a new leader, the Jets and Giants are attempting to build something with young quarterbacks, and the Rangers are looking for a fresh voice behind the bench.
The Knicks may own the city's spotlight — but everywhere you look, the New York sports scene is full of drama, change, and anticipation.
